Car Audio 101 – Alternator Tutorial

กันยายน 8th, 2009

with Mike Stiers www.maxxsonics.com ALTERNATORS The alternator powers the vehicle, all components and recharges the battery. A standard factory alternator ranges from 40 amps to 120 amps depending on vehicle. When the alternator is under high demand or the demand exceeds the alternators capability, your voltage will begin to fall and rely on the reserve of the battery. Lets use a 65 amp alternator for example in determining what aftermarket audio equipment the alternator can sufficiently …

Looks like you nailed this video pretty good….Many people don’t actually recognize the amperage that the car itself draw…..If you ever open up the fuse box look at all those fuses and you can tell that there is many components requiring power (amperage)…
Many people also don’t understand that loose belts, slipping belts due to wear/tear can also cause them problems, resulting in less amperage from the alt..anyways the video is very good and thanks for posting this up for us here on YOUTUBE

Not steep at all. Call any alternator manufacturer.

I think 30-50% of alt output used by the car is a little steep. And what is the company over pyle, pyramid, lanzar and legacy.

As far as good economy audio brands, I buy Boss and Pyle but I think I’m definatly gonna try Maxxsonics; I was thinking of getting the Crunch 1500.1 instead of another Boss DD3600. I really like these videos; they are great for beginners and more; they are straight forward and honest; like on the 1500.1 where it admitted 750 watts x 1 at 0ne ohm. Wow. With a 30×4 fuse rating you could have exaggerated that a lot more. Props.

Damn this makes more sense, my cars alt is 60amps and the regular system draw it 30, so my system is getting 30amps….. holy shit i need to upgrade because my system is only really at like 1/4 the true power capable.

ok thank you thats what i needed to know

A capacitor is a storage device that discharges very quickly but will actually create an additional draw on your electrical system to recharge. If you electrical system is already not strong enough for your aftermarket audio accessories then a cap will NOT help. Caps are good when you have the proper electrical setup and simply use the cap as a buffer during heavy bass drops.

What impedance voice coils are on your subs?
What is the rms powering handling on your subs?
A Yellow Top is generally good for around 1600watts from what I’ve seen.

Also, what do you think…I’m now most likely going to go with 2 12’s opposed to the 3 and use 2 Brutus’,1 on each 12. Do you think that I’d be better off using the 2 Brutus’ or just 1…I want as much SPL as I can get!!!

hahaha.. exactly… i know ton of people around here who just look into the subs and amp like i said before and have zero knowledge of anything else.. i have seen a “1200″ watt rms system running off of a10 gauge power wire.. im waiting for their car to catch on fire. haha. oh and ive seen a kid have 2 d4 coil subs and only wire 1 coil per sub, and he wonders why he keeps blowing subs…. people need to do research.

    What model Brutus amps?

Very true Tom! This video shows your potential and gives helpful calculations. Even included them off to the right in the details.

The Battery video in this series will be released next week. :-)

I wrote an article for our South American Distributor Conference last year in Costa Rica regarding enclsoure designs etc. That vid will be in this series. ;-)

wow.. great vid again !!!! learned some new math tricks in this one haha.. good stuff.. most people dont understand that a system consists of more than just a couple cool looking subs and a matching amp.. lol.. lots of physics and math go into makeing a system loud… good job on informing the noobs. lol

  22. tom58c said:

Very cool. Most alts though dont even put out the amps there rated for till 5000 + rpm. A lot of high out put alts do show power graphs with them. Amps from 500 – 5500 in most cases. Even a 250 amp alt will only do 20 or so amps at 500 -700 rmp. Unless disigned differently. Its still a need for a good battery or batteries, depending on what your doing.

Nice video Mike, now I can do some math :D .
